Lactate Threshold Testing: Know Your Thresholds
The Test Provides You With
Lactate Threshold 1 (LT1)
Lactate Threshold 2 (LT2)
Aerobic & Anaerobic threshold (measured by blood lactate analysis).
Heart rate, speed or power at each threshold.
Calculation of training zones.
The most suitable type of training for you.
Accurate Training Zones
Following the test we will be able to calculate your endurance training zones and provide guidance on what they mean. Lactate Threshold testing is the gold standard for determining training zones and is used in training intensity distribution models such as polarised (80:20) model. We will provide you with a heart rate and running speed or power output number which delineates each training intensity zone. This is fundamental for aerobic performance training plans.
How is the Test Conducted?
The test is performed on the treadmill or Watt bike or your own bike depending on your sport.
The intensity is gradually increased at 3 - 5 minute intervals until you reach LT2 (Lactate Threshold 2 / lactate turnpoint / anaerobic threshold). At the end of each step and tiny finger prick blood sample is taken which provides your blood lactate. Blood lactate is then analysed to provide your with a lactate curve.
Time Efficient Training Improvement Monitoring
Whether you are training for shorter events or longer distances, our testing session will identify your strengths and weaknesses. We can identify the areas to focus on and recommend the moist appropriate training for you. Regular Lactate Testing provide an analysis of current aerobic fitness level and can help monitour effectiveness of a training block.
Aerobic Threshold / LT1
Aerobic Threshold is an important marker of aerobic fitness, marks the upper limit of a nearly exclusive aerobic metabolism and below which allows exercise to last for hours such Ultramarathons and Ironman triathlon. The Aerobic Threshold is the boundary between zones 2 and 3 in the 5 zone heart rate model. This is important as large portions of an endurance training plan (80%) should be conducted in zone 2 which is below the Aerobic Threshold boundary.
Anaerobic Threshold / LT2
Lactate threshold 2 is the point at which blood lactate (and heart rate and oxygen consumption) start to rise exponentially until exhaustion occurs. Whilst definitions of Anaerobic Threshold vary in the scientific literature and with differing coaching models, in the popular polarised training methods LT2 marks the boundary of zone 3 and zone 4 in the 5 zone heart rate model. This is important as exercise above this intensity leads to exhaustion in a relatively short time period. It is an important intensity measure for prescribing higher intensity interval training sessions and in planning pacing strategies for events of 10km to marathon events.
Prices
The cost for Lactate Threshold testing is £110, and the session will last approximately 90minutes.
Following the test, we will discuss your results and explain how to alter you training schedule, based upon your goals.
